Article Summary Over Spanish Flu

The Spanish Flu was said to start in Madrid Spain in early 1918 while Spain was staying a neutral country admitting the waging WWI. Although many believe that it didn’t really start there it was just the only country sending out telegraphs to other countries during that time. Many Spaniards weren’t aware of how much the epidemic would affect them and they all went around to parties and ballrooms like normal, but many people fell ill, and many would be seen passing out in the streets due to the illness. Many observers thought influenza could’ve spread from France because of the heavy traffic from there.

The second part of the Spanish flu hit Spain hard in October of 1918 but slowed in December of the same year. Many health officials thought that the railroads played a major role in the spread so they stopped several trains transporting Portuguese workers. Due to the epidemic, the life of the Spaniards was interrupted and many things around the country were canceled. The mortality rate as the year went on increased from 0.65% of people dying out of 1,000 to 10.1%. Many involved in the church during this time thought the pandemic was a punishment for their sins. Although like other things during this time, they weren’t allowed to gather at the church for Mass or other church events. They ended up disinfecting many major things in Spain that were majorly used to try to help stop the spread along with disinfecting the nose and mouth. There were also a few drugs prescribed to help alleviate some symptoms.
